Summary: | After a review lasting several months, the state formalized a decision that Nikiski is a better site than the Matanuska-Susitna Borough-promoted Port MacKenzie for a gas liquefaction plant and marine terminal and cites a variety of reasons (including the potential effect on beluga whales and requirements for barge docking). The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has objected to these findings, and will provide its own substantive comments by September 1. Moreover, AGDC is balking at federal regulators' recommendation to collect sediment cores from a sampling of rivers and creeks to aid in determining environmental risks of open-cut trenching at pipeline crossings, and prefers the modeling approach. Also, the state team responded to regulators' questions on air quality concerns. |
