Description
Summary:Ernest Chase writes in reply to Theodore Garrish in regards to his October 5 memorandum to members of the Economic Policy Council. That memorandum was referred to Chase for a reply. Garrish's memorandum notes that the Executive Administration appears to support export of Alaskan natural gas to the East Asia (the Trans-Alaska Gas System is not mentioned by name) and that the Economic Policy Council will probably recommend that based on a draft of the Presidential finding. He warns such approval would generate concerns that the U.S. is retreating from its commitment to the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System (ANGTS). This would complicate discussions between the U.S. and Canada over construction of the southern portion of ANGTS. Chase responds that the Council did consider the issue and will consult with Canada further.
