Summary:Under Secretary Allen Wallis responds to Ambassador Allan Gotlieb's letter of May 29, 1987 on the Presidential endorsement of the Trans-Alaska Gas System which could undermine the viability of the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System. Wallis explains the study commissioned between President Reagan and Prime Minister Nakasone to investigate export of Alaska North Slope gas to Japan as the basis for the Presidential statement. Wallis assures the Ambassador that no decision has been made, and suggests a meeting.
